Hands down Whitney Houston. She's somehwat lost it now but in her heyday she was accepted as the greatest. The emotion, the soul, the range, the power, the versatility. Anyone can sing, but when she sings, it touches you you're soul. She makes the lyrics mean something.

She set the standard for singing. You hear prhases like "Oh she might be the next Whitney Houston" or "she sounds like the second coming of Whitney Houston" or "whether you sing like WHitney Houston or Britney Spears...."

And she always brought it LIVE unlike many of the so called "singers" of today.

My personal favorite is Minnie Riperton. But thats a personal preference. Its probably Aretha Franklin or Billie Holliday. I'd go with Billie Holliday.
