I think you could do something even more sinister and probably intriguing for your professor: the examination of possible artificially created culture wars where the warriors are unaware that they are waging war for cultures created by groups of people with the intention of creating the cultural war for their own benefit. Ground your theory in the book "Cultural Hegemony" by David Laitin, but you can use things like the "Death tax and the American Dream" to look at the possibility that astronomically wealthy in the US convince the population that anyone can become like the if they work hard enough, so that things like inheritance taxes are minimized. You could also look at other issues like affirmative action, flag burning, education as artificial issues of culture in the eyes of the culture makers of this society.

Look at the Democratic Party since the 60's. Their platform has been to culturally divide the nation on issues of race and class in order to create a voting block. They also created the welfare system that has created a whole new culture of dependency on the government.
