i suggest reading self reliance by ralph waldo emerson....he's spiritual, but in a way that empowers the individual over external forces that try to sway you one way or another

that fact that you ask this question reveals that you are controlled by your emotions. Which means that you are slave to your emotions. Religious leaders are just as bad for they according to Matthew 23 WEB
1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples,

2 saying, "The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses' seat.

3 All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don't do their works; for they say, and don't do.

4 For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

It's a spiritual union we hunger for with God. He is our Father and we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

Remember Psalms 53 - The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

Give your life to Christ and become more powerful than you could possibly imagine through Him.

Don't pay attention to them. Tell them to **** off, and you do whatever you feel is right.
