My wife and I have a difference of oppinion about the use of the words "sleepy" vs "tired". I use the word "sleepy" discribing how I might feel sitting in a seminar all day, or something like that. And, I use the word "tired" when I'm ready to jump in bed and go to sleep.

Now, on the other had, SHE uses "sleepy" when SHE'S about to jump in bed to go to sleep, and she uses the word "tired" to discribe how SHE might feel after a seminar, or after walking home, exerzising, etc. Who do YOU agree with? Husband or wife????? :o)
Thanks.

Contrary to popular opinion, I tend to be with you--I use SLEEPY when I'm feeling nappish but TIRED at the end of the day when when my whole body is worn out and ready for sleep.

Your wife is correct. Sleepy means you are ready to get in the bed to go to sleep. Tired means you are weary, bored and overexerted to the point of discomfort in doing whatever you may be doing. What may be confusing you is that the symptoms of tiredness often come along with sleepiness. However, sleepiness is more often associated with going to bed at the end of each day.

Yes, your wife is using the word "sleepy" in a better context than you are. Though I can understand how some seminars might make you feel sleepy--especially if they are boring!

I agree with her...sleepy is when you want to fall asleep. Tired can have many meanings, from being sleepy to the way your body feels after a workout.

Hmmmm....I agree with your wife. Sorry. Sleepy=sleep. That's why the words are similar.

I have always associated tired with physical exertion, sleepy, it seems to me, is the state of a very relaxed mind, ready for shutdown, in preparation for resting or a nights sleep.

If you look up sleepy in the thesaurus it will say "tired" and if you look up tired it will say "sleepy". So you're equally correct. Personally, I use them both interchangeably.
