Some mowers run at only one speed which is set high enough for you to mow. If it will only idle then check the cable movement if it has a throttle cable to make sure it isn't broke. If it doesn't have a throttle cable, look around by the top of the carburetor and try moving the linkage to make sure it isn't stuck. You may have grass clippings built up in there preventing the governor from working.

You pobably have a throttle lever near where you push. Follow the line down to the engine. Move the throttle back and forth. Is something moving at the engine? If not, fix the line, if it is, use a screw drive to adjust your throttle at the engine. One direction gives you more play, the other direction gives you less. If this doesn't work you may need to clean your carborator. Buy a spray cleaner and it comes with instructions.

Some lawnmowers have 1 speed and others have adjustable speeds.
