It because you are alone, you think you hear things that are not there.Try to forget it, watch some tv, listen to some music or call a friend if you feel alone or scared.
It might also be just a racoon or some small animal that lives in the celing or just walking on your roof.

Your mind is translating an unrelated sound to be footsteps upstairs... tell yourself there is no one in the house, and then try to find out where the noise is really coing from.

your house is probably settling. No matter the age of the house, there will be noises. I used to think that one of our cats was jumping off the bed in my bedroom upstairs, but it was just the house moaning. In a different house, we joked that the "General" was playing on the rafters in the attached garage. After living with it for over four years, my husband took a hammer to one nail. No more General. I was sad.

I would be very careful with the way you intend investigate this problem. If it's not human, spirit-ghost, then I would really consider getting outside help before you get yourself seriously hurt mentally, physicly or all of the above.

You either have ghosts upstairs or your pet is trying on the family's shoes.... If you don't have a pet, you've got big rats trying on shoes.... But seriously, want to call 911?

Its probably nothing.When were alone things in a quiet house become more enhanced.If you truly think someone is there then leave and call someone to check it out.
