I don't think so either. I have a friend whose daughter at the time was only 15/16 yrs old and she opened a myspace account without her parents knowledge and then posted pics of herself, her older sister and her sisters young children. The real problem with this was the fact that their father doesn't know where they are and this would have a been a real easy way of finding out. |SIDE NOTE: their father was a drug addict and very abusive towards all of them and that is why they left him and he doesn't know how to contact them| Now, another thing is that she put up her phone number, physical address, and A LOT of personal information about her and her entire family. Of course they were not monitoring her use of the net and when they found out that she had one, they closed the account and are actively monitoring her internet usage. (her mom and step-dad are both cops)
These kinds of websites are great for older and more responsible people to keep in touch and to espress themselves. Young people just don't know where that fine line is between innocently talking to someone and giving all of your life's information out for ALL of the world to see.
So, basically, NO, I do not think that someone under the age of 16 should be allowed to have a myspace.
There are sites like m yspace out there that are specifically for school age children and that child must be registered in a school and have a valid school email addy for them to use these sites. They are also closely monitored. These sites, I do however, approve of.

My opinion is mixed on this. I would not mind my kids having a myspace BUT- I am right behind them when they are on the computer - I know every website they go to before they go there and I check all of their mail and who they are corresponding with. I have a set of rules regarding being on the internet and if they are not followed then they lose the priveledge of using the computer. Unfortunatley, most parents do not do this and most kids (and unfortunately a lot of 20 -30 year old girls too) are not mature enough and are not discerning enough to recognize tricks of predators and how to deal with them when they are approached. Too many abused and fatherless girls are out there looking for attention and they will stick like magnets to someone who gives them the least amount of attention and fall into traps that they don't even see until it is too late. I cannot blame myspace though because before that, it was happening in chatrooms all over the place- there are many places similar to myspace- that one just happens to be getting the attention now. Ultimately, whether it is the computer or out in the world- it is the parents responsibility to know what their children are doing , who they are with and where they are . I am amazed at the amount of parents that don't know the kids or the parents of those that their kids are hanging out with.

Nobody can rape and kill someone on a website. Hysteria is really a crazy thing. As far as Myspace is concerned it is just the New Mall kids used to hang at the mall and those who prey would find them there IF they were by themselves and IF they were taught what was smart. Do you know who is charge of those IF's? The parents that is who. Monitor your kids (if you are letting them on the internet at all) Teach them BOUNDARIES. Teach them Respect. Give them the KNOWLEDGE that protects them and give them the SAFETY of knowing they can go to you with ANY problem. For great online Kid safety programs check out my third source below.

You know what? There's no more children raped and killed now than there were 30 years ago. The media just caught on that people being scared meant better ratings, so they make a big deal every time something happens.

its the adults over 16 that are hurting the kids..so maybe they should be banned from it!
but anyway, its not that they shouldnt be allowed on, its just that they need to learn to be safer. and its NOT just myspace...its ALL online chatting sites that are dangerous. for some reason myspace is just attracting all the media because its so big. but if they were to shut down myspace, another website with the same idea will pop up somewhere and more children will get hurt. my point being that it shouldnt be limited to those over 16....its just that EVERYONE needs to be taught more about internet saftey

I don't see the problem, It's not the damn kids faults they're meeting strangers and pedos. It's the parents fault for not monitoring the kid's activity, and watching what they're doing. I don't think age is an issue, as long as they're mature, and their caretakers know what they're up to on the net! Besides, keeping the age down isn't gonna outsmart kids, they'll just say they're older, and the problem won't cease

Myspace is not the reason that children got into dangerous situations.
Poor parental control of their children is the reason.
Parents need to step-up and take control of the situation with their children. Monitor what they are doing on the web. Know what is going on in their child's life.

I think its a tossup.... I would love to say no one under the age of 18 is allowed on... but people lie about their age... and sometimes teenagers --- 15, 16 year olds are exceptionally mature for their age and deserve to be on to talk with people of like-minds.... besides... what's going to stop the child molesters? they will still be online in chat rooms.

I do not think that myspace is for children under 16 without their parent's consent. Presonally, I am thirteen years old and uses myspace, but my parents trust me to not have any contact with any person I do not know.

i think so, because you hear on the news that these young, 13-17 year old girls are meeting these sexual predators online and taking off. look at that girl a few months ago. she took off toEurope or something. this is just a classic example of lack of parental control because the parents have no idea who their kids are talking to and what they are talking about
