I am speaking from experience as I answer this. when you are with a person like this, they break you down, strip you of your self-worth, and make you feel like you don't deserve any better, and that you can't go on without them. After a while, some start to believe that BS....I know, I did for almost 9 years. The man I was with slapped me, choked me, threw things at me, and called me "b*tch", "retard", "idiot" and the C word on a daily basis. I finally had enough and I left. It has been hard, but I would rather live on the street than live under the thumb of a controlling, hateful, domineering SOB.

You ask why but until personally know a woman that has been abuse, both physically and mentally, you will never understand, almost all of the answers so far are very correct, battered and abused women are stripped down to nothing, they are left with no self esteem, the fear that they must live with, I mean the fear if they leave and the man catches up to them. Any man that hurts a woman, either physically or mentally in any way should be punished in a way that will hurt them more than they have hurt any woman.

that is the point..... only they know what is going on in the head area.... and believe it or not, women think they can change these guys..... maybe if I stay just one more day he will love me more!
and sometimes it is just plane ole fear keeping them there..... a lot of men who make the threats to kill will do just that... kill the woman if they even try to leave, or make their lives a living hell...... and most feel they deserve what they are getting..... *sigh*, I wish I could get my hands on every man that does that to a woman..... I am the sort of gal who does NOT put up with that stuff..... there is not a man on earth I would be afraid to stand up to..... *laughing* just ask my husband and my 3 sons, and any other male that knows me...... not a laughing matter, but I am just not the type to stand by while a man has his macho machine running....... and lets face it , the laws of this country do not protect anyone....... until there is a death or near death they guys can just about do as they please........ *rolling eyes*...... God bless

it never makes sense unless you are in the situation yourself. most women fall in love and say that if their man ever put his hands on them, they would leave. well, when you love someone, you try to stick through rough times. the man always seems to be so sorry and show you in a million ways. as time goes by, the man becomes more controlling and then come the threats. when your life is threatened, you become scarred. its a yo-yo effect. back and forth!

Its called battered woman syndrome.
If you keep demeaning someone then they will start to believe that they are worthless.
Battered women often blame themselves and stay in the abusive relationship.
