I would discourage you from taking melatonin for a couple of reasons:

First, if you take it you must be sure that it is from a vegetable source. If it's from an animal or human source you can get CJD the human form of "mad cow" which is a fatal brain disease.

Second, I would discourage you from taking it because if you take it your body may produce less of its own natural melatonin. Then you will be drug dependent and in the long run worse off.

I would encourage you to try something else: try sitting or ideally walking in the sun for ten minutes within the hour after sunrise. This is supposed to help reprogram you where your body produces more of its own melatonin.

Your body is supposed to be at its peak for melatonin between about midnight and 7 am so try to sleep in this time.

If you have any lights in your room at night or have to put on a light to go to the bathroom it should be red (red bulb or shade or glass). If not, it cuts off your natural melatonin production. You need to be in 100% darkness (or red light if necessary) to produce maximum melatonin.

As it gets dark start dimming the lights around your house. This prepares your body to know it's night and to start producing melatonin.

I also think that Tai Chi and/or Yoga help over time. Sometime around when I started Tai Chi and had done yoga for a long while I started sleeping better.

If you still insist on taking it then follow the instructions.

I think 300 milligrams would kill ya! The tabs usually come in 3 mg or 5 mg. I wouldn't take more than one 5 mg tab a night. Take it 1/2 hr to 1 hr before you're ready to go to bed. Don't worry about your body becoming dependent on it unless you repeatedly use it for many nights. It's a very safe helper some nights when you just need to sleep and can't get there.

I take the 5mg every night but some nights i take 2. My doctor says theres nothing wrong with even taking up to 15mg once in a while but don't make a habit of it.

300 mg/day divide it up in 3 doses 100 mg 3 times a day
