I have the software, and I downloaded from both printer's websites. Neither of them worked. The cpu will not recognize the printers. They are not compatible, is what a techie friend of mine who came to check it said. He said I need a printer cable, and when I called Wal-Mart they said its called a parallel cord. But does this connect then to the usb slot on the printer itself? or is it like an adapter?

I'm assuming that the proper printer software is installed. If so, you might check your connections, especially to make sure the printers are plugged into the correct port.
There is another possibility. I bought a new PC with Windows XP Home. I already had an old Lexmark printer & attempted to install the software for it. That's when I learned that it was incompatible with this operating system. So, I ended up buying a newer model HP printer, which serves my purposes. You may just have to buy a new printer. But maybe someone else has another idea. Anyone?

Well like the other guy said, you need the driver. Either put in the CD that came with it OR do what I did and go to your manufacturers website (Lexmark) and click on drivers and downloads.Click on find a printer driver. Choose your kind of printer. Choose the Model and click windows xp and install the driver. Hook up the printer again and you should get a message on the bottom right saying New Hardware found and after a while it should say your hardware is installed and ready to use. Hope i could help.

First thing I would recomend is to make sure all drivers are installed for your printer. Though USB, that does NOT mean it will be UPnP (universal plug 'n play) where no softwear is required. Also, be sure you are using printers that are compatible with your computer. If possible, ensure the printers themselves work by connecting them to another computer. Without more specific information, that is all I can think of at the moment.

You may also want to check that the usb port is enabled in the bios, as sometimes the manufactures do not enable the usb port.
