Actually, anyone who commits a homicide is an assasin. There are "legal" assasins in a theater of war referred to as "snipers."
The first assasins were nomadic arabs who were quite fearless. They would smoke hashish before raiding, and that is the root of the word, coming from "hashashins."
Any more, only those who kill a prominent figure are referred to as assasins. But, the hashish is still available, I'm told, smuggled primarily from Lebanon (prices should be going up), Kashmir or Nepal.

The word, assassin, was first used during the Crusades. This was a really tough group who pulled out all the stops to get rid of the European knights who were invading the Holy Land and killing the Jews and the muslims.

An assassin is simply a "hired gun." If someone is a sharpshooter, and they happen to hang with critters from the human underworld, they'll get hired. Is it worth it? Not on earth, nor in hellfire.
