Titanic (1997)
Runtime:174 Minutes
The Date the Titanic Sank
On April 15, 1912, at 2:10 AM, the mighty ship of dreams, The R.M.S. Titanic foundered, bringing with it some 1523 souls into the cold sea. The story is well known, not only because of the popular movie. There has been a fascination with the Titanic since that frightful night many years ago. Over 3000 books have been written on the subject and several movies have been produced. As another anniversary passes, it makes me wonder why it is still so fresh on our minds.
The year of 1912 is said to be a year where people reveled in all the modern conveniences. Society felt that there was no way to go but upwards until the Titanic disaster. Today's society looks back on the disaster and shutters about how a terrible tragedy could have happened.
It seems so senseless. Why didn't they slow down after they received the ice warnings? Why weren't there more life boats? Why didn't they fill the life boats to capacity? Why can't mankind with our magnificent advances control our fate? There does not appear to be any answers.
Most do feel though, that they were pushing fate. Some called the ship practically unsinkable, although the ship builders refrained from calling her unsinkable. Some Catholics were horrified to spot the number 3909 04 (mirror image roughly reads, no pope) below Titanic's name on her bow since it had been built in Belfast, a city that was divided in religious bigotry. Some cancelled their plans to be on the Titanic because of premonitions of danger. Some sensed danger, but boarded the ship anyway. Of course, we would not have heard about this if she had not sunk.
What can we learn from the tragic events of the Titanic? Are we laughing in the face of fate today? We have made fantastic advances with computers, we rely on them for our daily lives. Will there be talk about how most people of today, felt the stock market could not crash? Will articles be wrote that says we did not heed warnings about global warming and protecting our environment? Will people wonder why we have we didn't take more of a stand against privacy invasion? Only when we look back, with 20-20 hind site, can we say we should have heeded the warning signs.
There are many tributes to the ill-fated Titanic on the Internet. The amount of information is vast and interesting. I hope you enjoy the following sites while remembering the souls aboard the R.M.S. Titanic.
