Xenosaga. I'm an RPG researcher and I've found that Xenosaga is probably the best. The story line of Xenosaga 1:Der Wille zer Macht is that it takes place 4,000 years in the future. An alien race known as the Gnosis have come. Ceratin happenings such as the Miltian Conflict have caused trouble in current time(4765 T.C.). The Miltian Conflict happened 14 years before 4765, and is still a mystery. Only you can find out what really happened in that event and many others as you unravel the story of Xenosaga. Xenosaga episode 2:Jenseits von Gut und Bose starts out with you in the Miltian Conflict. Fight through many regular and boss fights as you proceed in solving the true story of the conflict. When you are at the the Miltian Conflict, you are 14 years in the past. And now your main characters come into the story big time. Next, after you finish the first part of the game, you are taken back 14 years in the furture, to current time. This part of Xenosaga 2 takes you to the contiuation of Xneosaga 1, with a new story line. When you end Xenosaga 2, everyone says good-bye for 1 whole year. On Xenosaga episode 3:Also sprach Zarathrustra, it is a year after Xenosaga 2. (Game to be released on 8/29/06). Shion Uzuki, one of the main characters resigns from her job at Vetcor when she finds out that they were behind the Gnosis happening. KOS-MOS, another main character, she is was the main project at Vector, and now her project is to be canceled. But now a new look-alike android named T-elos has shown up to take KOS-MOS' place. She is a very mysterious character, and at that most people I've spoke with say she is there to destroy KOS-MOS. Not sure. This episode so far is the final episode of the seires. But may I request that you play the episodes in order,or else they will not make sense. Thank-You!!

Star Ocean, Final Fantasy, Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile, Xenosaga, Xenogears, Dragon Quest, Dot Hack, Wild Arms, Musashi ( Samurai legend looks bad, too short in my opinion), Front Mission, Dirge Of Cerberus:Final Fantasy Vll, Megaman X Command Mission (Maybe doesn't like too good for you).

GTA III San Andreas- where you pretend you're a rapper gansta.
POP:T2T- where you're the Prince of Persia with a split personality- and a heck of right swinging arm!
God of War II- seems to be better than the awesome first version.
Or just check out the list here:

Is the Vice City set up your alley? Or are you referring to D&D type games? The Sims would also qualify if you consider that everything they do is directed by the player. Baldur's gate, Myst (I couldn't figure it out), Champions of Norrath and Everquest Online come to mind.
