Well, to me cherry picking is when I go to all the different grocery stores and buy only the items that are on sale.
Or sometimes, I go to a cherry orchard and pick cherries to make a yummy pie.
What else could you possibly mean?

As I understand it, it is the selection of a few options out of a wider basket of options based on which simply feels or looks good. Its the opposite of taking an appropriate, informed decision. For example, many people in a poor economy feel that when a company is faced with many job applications for a single position, they resort to cherry picking. "Ok.. This one has red hair. I like that. Let's pick her". Or..... "This one's name looks interesting.. I like the sound of his last name. Let's pick him".

I agree with the definition supplied by "faux pas." In the US, it's most often a basketball term. In soccer, that type of play is illegal and is referred to as being "offsides," with possesion of the ball immediately being given to the defending team of that goalbox.
