I could never quite get this one.

This is no kidding.

That depends on the base you are using for addition. If the base is more than TWO then 1+1=2, however in binary system there are only two digits which are 0 and 1. Therefore, 1+1 will equal ZERO, carry (1)! Therefore 1+1=10 (pronounced ONE ZERO), which is equivalent to (THREE) in decimal (and all other systems)!

Define one.

in fact, if you are at one with the universe, you cannot add them together.

1 with the universe plus 1 with the universe does not make sense. You cannot be more than at one with the universe.

So I assume you mean as a place in a race or similar... in which case 1 + 1 = a pretty good record for any athelete.

Alternatively, you could use a preaxiomic definition of one to recieve all numbers as an answer, because if the identity axiom is disobeyed you cannot tell a number from any other number.

1 + 1 is either: 2 or 11 or in some cases of human beings coming together: 3, 4, 5, or more.. as in man plus woman = child

1+1=3 for large values of 1 (ie 1.49) with the answer rounded to the nearest whole number.
