MIT is the more popular in terms of regular folks recognizing the prestige of the university. MIT also has a more diverse student body than RIT. And more high tech jobs are located in the west, so MIT gets my vote.

Depends on the major. RIT is a great school in a nice location - good mix of geeks and artsy types. I'm not sure that either is 'the best university in America', but both are in the top 5%.
Never been to MIT........ Massachusetts Institute of Technology - located in Massachusetts.... A few miles west of the Atlantic Ocean... on the East Coast.
RIT - Rochester, New York - located 60 miles~ish southeast of Toronto and nowhere near New York City.

That all depends on their respective degree programs, level of interaction between professors and students, lecture/lab room sizes, the diversity of the students, what each university and their surrounding communities have to offer, type of financial, academic, personal assistance provided to currently attending and prospective students. It is not realistic to compare MIT and RIT because each university has strengths and weaknesses in regards to the above categories. There will always be an X-factor involved when comparing universities, and that is the personal perspective.

There is no comparison. MIT is one of the best universities in the world, while RIT is a decent regional college.
US News & World Reports ranks MIT as the 7th highest ranked university in the country -- ahead of such schools as Columbia and Dartmouth.
On the other hand, RIT isn't even in the same category. They fall into the category of reginoal universities that have graduate programs but offer very few PhD programs. They rank sixth in their region -- behind Villanova, Providence College, Loyola of MD, College of New Jersey and Fairfield University.
Comparing MIT to RIT is like comparing a Rolls Royce to a nice Chevy.
