Common problem on the Taurus. The exhaust cracks open in between the two converters where the bracket to hold the exhaust to the transmission is mounted to the pipe. After the exhaust heats up the metal expands and it is not as loud. You can replace the y pipe assembly, but it is very expensive. A good welding at your local muffler shop should take care of it.

you car can have a bad ignition problem or a fuel line problem or a bad plug or wire it's not too bad but it should be giving a code that a auto zone or a nice parts store would do them for free to let you know what it is before getting ripped from a mechanic .

sometimes.. My guess is the exhaust just needs to be unloosened and retightened and to check the gaskets for leaking (as the medal expands it shuts up and that would rule out the cat)

Honestly it sounds like you have a bad catalytic converter, or your headers are not tight enough.

No, it is not usual...but it could be a number of things. Take it to a mechanic
