There are several things you could do.
a) Read a book/magazine
b) Shop duty-free gifts for family/boss/etc
c) Go to a restaurant/coffee pub and enjoy a meal/coffee.
d) Watch the planes take off and land.

Depends on what airport. The Atlanta and SF airports have cool stuff: shops, things to look at (books/magazines) and things to eat.
Read; sleep; talk to people; watch planes land/take off from windows. Think about what you're going to do when you get to your destination. Talk on your cell phone. Make a list of people you might want to write postcards to...enough suggestions?

no count if this is a sin... than i'm very sinny... lol i've got spent time in R&S on instant links in Las Vegas, Fargo, Kansas city, and Frankfurt (Germany, no longer Kentucky) airports... perchance there's a particular point in purgatory for us... as quickly as, for the period of a layover in Tokyo, i all started "jonesing" for loss of a connection... Or... perchance the KGB are enjoying our witty banter...

i bought a book in the airport and finished it during my flights and the layover.

watch the people and make up stories about where you think they are going or coming from and what they are doing. or, just laugh at how stupid some people are.
