It does not have to be a nurse, but it has to be a female. This is mainly to protect the doctor against a lawsuit...

I don't think it's against the law, but except in emergencies you always have the right to have a second person and/or a woman doctor (assuming one is available). Many clinics require this as a policy for their own protection, but AFAIK it's not codified in law anywhere and women often have examinations with (hopefully trusted) male doctors alone.

Bottom line: If you're nervous, ask for a woman MD or a second person. Or bring a friend. And don't be afraid to report anything inappropriate.

it's not against the law unless the patient requests a female present and the (male) doctor refuses.

No, so you need to request one! I've only been to one doctor who did this type of exam without one in the room, I never went there again, it turned out he was a real sicko as he ended up doing bad things to my friend & her sister. He tried to talk me into a hysterectomy and that was 20 years ago. Request an available assistant to be in the room so you will be more comfortable. I hope this helps.

it is only againist the law if you are having a pap smear. When having a pap smear and you have a male docyor a female nurse must be there in the same room.

no its not against the law, its more of a liablity thing with the drs. that you can't say they did something they didn't. I work for one who requires a nurse or M.A. in the room for this reason.
