I think you need to be more specific.
Variables are just like blanks.
2x + 7= 23 is the same thing as 2 (times) ___ +7=23
The first thing you have to do to solve for a variable is to isolate the variable. Get it to one side of the equals mark and make sure no other numbers are on the same side as it is.
2x+7=23
2x+7-7= 23-7
2x+0=16
2x=16
What I just did in this problem was the first step in isolating the variable. In order to "get rid of" the number 7 on the left side, I had to subtract it from both side of the equal mark. (I subtracted it because originally, it was added on the left...you do the opposite action of whatever the original problem is.)
2x+7=23
2x+7-7= 23-7
2x+0=16
2x=16
2x/2= 16/2
1x/1=8
x=8
The final step in completing a problem like this is to fully isolate the variable. In order to do this, both side of the equal mark must be divided by 2, in this case. You would divide because division is the opposite of multiplication and anytime a number is directly next to a variable, it means to divide. When you divide a number by the same number, that number equals 1/1 which is the same thing as 1, in this case 1x. But since you don't define the coefficient 1 for a variable, the 1 is not written and it is left as simply x.

If you need more help, you are welcome to IM me! :-)

LOL im a sophmoor in highschool and ive been doing variables since 7th grade its simple algebra X+7=20
the answer would be X=13 because u would need to get x by it self so subtract 7 from both sides and u would come up with 13

variables are what replace numbers in an equation (x+2=4) but they arent usually that easy

what you do is break it down:

x+2=4
-2 -2
-----------
x=4-2
x=2

you just do the same thing in a longer equation

no offense, but im going into eighth grade lol

I cannot understand how you got into college - not only by your lack on knowledge in basic math, but by the syntax used in your question. (Though I am certain you don't know what syntax means)

If you got government money to go, then I am (once again) pissed off at the world.
