Yes, when I was much younger- it was in a small town, but a long walk to the town pool- so we used to hitch- but never alone- it was usually a couple of us and we were picked up by one of the neighborhood kids' mother. My Mom found out, and that was the end of my hitchhiking career!

Yes in college I had too to get to work, over 30 miles away.
one time a drunk guy picked me up and I did not know he was drunk till I got in and he was swerving all over the road, needless to say I said "this is my place up here" when actually I was still 10 miles away, thank god I'm still alive, I never hitched again.

1970 hitched from Frankfurt to Paris & back 4 day weekend with wife & $15! {We never expected to be able to see Paris again!} From Illinois to Kentucky to Michigan to Misuouri & Arkansas! {Lookin for a state to marry us w/o my mommies permission} .From Texas to Chicago w/$2000 in my pocket! [Too frugal to spend money to be used to git da Mrs. back to Texas & set up house] 2000 from Port Macquarie to Wachope - [Sister in Law bad mouthed me & I got out!.Met bride at railstation 10 minutes later!]

Yep ... it took me 14 hours to make what would have been a 4 hour drive if my car hadn't broken down!
