A great historical fiction novel is "Ghost Rider" by Sharyn McCrumb. It goes back and forth (and sometimes over laps) between current time and Civil War time. I am not a civil war buff, but this book was great!! It is so much more than a Civil War story. Another great story, is "The Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon. It is about a woman who is transported back in time, and meets this Scottish manley man. I like it because thier is romance, adventure, and the main character is a smart and resourceful woman. "The Outlander" is actually the first in a series of three books. Another good historical fiction book was "Pope Joan", but I can not remember the name of the author. That was about the rumored female pope.

A wonderful book I recently finished is "THe great Escape" by Paul Brickhill, it is better than the movie! "THe Longest Tunnel" by Alan Burgess is really cool too, it goes into more detail and has more info on the prisoners and how they got shot down and ended up in the camp, etc. Very interesting reading, some of it is pretty funny!!! LOL you have to read these two they are great!!
Also, if you like good stories try books by Albert Payson Terhune, mostly he wrote dog stories, but alot have romance also, the dog is the hero of course, and they are VERY good books. Check it out!!
Listen if you want some REALLY good reading try the Bible!!
Have fun!!!!

Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series; it's a time travel book, about a woman in the 1940's who while on vacation in Scottland, steps through these stones that resemble Stonehenge and ends up being transported back in time 200 years. Great history, great setting, and the hero of the book is swoon worthy. The first book is the best, but I fell in love with the characters and just had to keep reading the series. I haven't read the last one yet.

anything written by Jodi Picoult
for romance novels, you can't beat:
Julia Quinn
Julie Garwood
Johanna Lindsey . . . well, she's hit-or-miss -- some are awesome, others suck the big one; my favs are Once a Princess & You Belong to Me, all the books in the Malory series (starts with Love Only Once), Man of My Dreams, and Until Forever
Jude Deveraux (Remembrance is my #1 romance book of all time)
Patricia Cabot (actually a pen name for Meg Cabot, the Princess Diaries author)
Suzanne Enoch
Victoria Alexander
Christina Dodd
Elizabeth Lowell
Caroline Courtney (these are very Jane Austen-ish, I don't know if they're in print anymore, I inherited the set from my gran)

It's probably cliche by now, but The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons are really good books. I liked the latter much better so I'd go with that. Those also go along the lines of historical fiction.

Currently reading "The Life and Loves of a She-Devil" by Fey Weldon. The book is also based on a movie that came out in (I think) 1983 called "She-Devil." It's about a woman who lives in a suburban area with her husband and two children. She is kinda "big" and her husband leaves her for a Romantic Novel author so Ruth (the "she-devil") plans out elaborate schemes to ruin his and his new mistress's life such as blowing up their suburban home, leaving the two children with their father and his mistress, sending the mistress her aged mother who she has in a nursing home at the time, and so very much more!

Try Elswyth Thane's Williamsburg series (then take a trip to Colonial Williamsburg). She's an oldie, but goodie in the historical field. Her books parallel American history and bring it alive (with nice romantic plots interwoven).

Any Minette Walters books. The shape of Snakes - fantastic
Scold's bridle - old favourite
Acid row (I think) - the best,
I gave this one away that's why I'm not sure on the title.
These are murder mystery with a twist. Set in England and explore social prejudice in its many and varied forms.
