MY SON IS 6 MONTHS AND I WAS JUST WONDERING WHEN HE SHOULD BE HOLDING IS OWN BOTTLE, IS THERE SOMETHING I COULD DO TO ENCOURAGE HIM TO DO SO.

I work at a daycare and a few of the children that are close to a year old do not even hold their bottles. There is one that never held her bottle and she is over a year. I believe that children do not hold their bottles early now are because we don't lay them down with a bottle anymore. Anyway I think your son is right on target, most in the nursery start at about 6-8 months.

There is no age when a baby should (as in ought to be) holding their own bottle. In fact, for as long as they are taking a bottle, it is better for baby to be held by a parent rather than letting him holding it by himself. Feeding time isn't just about food for babies, it's also about bonding. As for when some babies do hold their bottle, the average is about 5-7 months. Somewhere in there. But it's not something they ever have to learn to do. My son never did. He really didn't try, and I certainly didn't 'push' him to as another poster suggested. As his parent is was my job to hold his bottle, and I cherished all those feedings knowing they were only going to last for that first year. If he wants to hold it, let him go for it, if he doesn't, why would you push him? It's not a developmental milestone that he needs to pass, just something some babies do.

My daughter was holding her own bottle before then, I just put her hands on the bottle and when I knew she could hold it but just didn't want to, I'd tell her, "I will hold and cuddle you, but I know you can hold that bottle yourself."

She got a bottle at the same time we ate, so I had to eat after my fiance because we always held her while she ate, I told her she was old enough to hold it herself so I could eat my meal too.

She could hold a four ounce bottle at 3 months and a 8 ounce bottle by the time she was 4 months.

At 6 months I was introducing her to a cup and she started weaning herself off hte bottle by then and was completely off the bottle by her first birthday.

Sometimes you have to give kids a little push (and some kids require a big one). Just tell him to hold it and put his hands around it, start with a four ounce bottle or don't let him hold his bottle at all and start giving him a cup maybe you will get lucky and he will be off the bottle by his first birthday like doctors say.

To be honest, the proffesional opinion is that babies should not hold thier own bottle. When they are capable of holding up a bottle is when they should be introduced to a sippy cup...the reason behind is so that the baby never feels a sense of ownership with the bottle and there fore will not have a hard time leaving it behind.

My son began when he was 7 months. Give him the bottle with a little milk(just enough for him to be able to hold) and he'll begin on his own.

my first boy started holding his bottle at 3 months and my second started at 10 so i just simply stopped holding it for him. I'm not saying this is what you should do, all children are different. but if hes attentive and holds other objects that are around the same weight and size and if you aren't comfortable holding it for her/him you might want to give it a try.

I loved feeding my daughter and bonding so she never got a chance to hold her bottle or wanted to unti l was weening her from them to warm milk in a sippy (which was when she was 13mthsold). She started drinking water from a straw sippy at 6 months. She wouldn't drink her warm milk from a sippy until she was 14 mths old and that was fine with me.

Enjoy the closeness this gives you and your son and cherish the bond it is making with you holding his bottle and snuggling with him during it. Babies don't stay babies forever!!!

between 5-7 months. I held the bottle for the first 4 months. then I propped up the bottle on a small blanket, the babies reach for it more, they teach themselves. Most babies dont do it, cause the mom does it.
