Advise the court of your feelings and you will not be made to swear on a bible. I won't do it -- seems dumb and hypocritical to me. I'm with you all the way!!!!!!!!!!

We might as well swear on Dr. Seuss

First, you're assuming the Bible is a book of lies, which many people would disagree with. Just because you don't find value in the book doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way.

Second, the use (or not) of the Bible to swear upon is a personal choice, though it may be common practice in some communities. It's historical usage was based on the respect that followers of that particular religion have/had for the Bible, which symbolically by extension imparts the seriousness of the oath to tell the truth.

The US Supreme Courts has already ruled that a person cannot be compelled to swear on the Bible, nor be required to take an oath (in the religious sense of the word) at all. The minimum requirement is that the person affirm their testimony will be true, and that they are aware of the consequences of perjury.

Contempt of court, BTW, means refusing to obey a court order. It doesn't mean just showing disrespect for the court, except for attorneys who have already promised to show respect for the court as part of their professional oath.

I dont know who is asking this question, but I think I am offended by the question. We are supposed to obey the laws of the land, and if the lawmakers are in the wrong Im sure God will deal with them as He is. Second the Bible is the word of God, period.
Not even science can disprove the fact that creation and all therein has been created by God. If the writer of this qiestion believes there is no God, then I ask why go on living? Is there no hope for the soul? I believe there is.

For the moment, I will disregarding your bigoted statement about the Bible. I've been an attorney since 1993, and the only time I've every seen a witness "swear on the bible" is on TV or in the movies.

I'm offended that you don't do more research on the topic. You are not forced to swear on the bible. In fact, many people find it objectionable to do so. In such cases you just give your oath, no swearing on the bible is necessary.

Actually, I am just glad that they don't make people do it anymore, since the Bible itself says not to do it.

James 5:12 "But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and [your] nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation."

i am offended, but not in any hurry to change it because, should i have to swear on it, i wouldnt feel bad about lying. and the 'so help me god' would make me more inclined to pathologically lie.
