... ONLY. A place, only for people that use their brain and decide for themselves, what they do and for what reason. No superstitions, no cults, no religions. Does that idea do something for you?

I am not really surprised, but that a whole bunch of 'believers' just can't resist to put their 1 penny worth of meaninglessness in here.
Concerning segregation, these little minds seem unaware of them having started that already. Amusing! Oh anyone notice that this was addressed to 'Atheists'? Obviously lacking reading skills ...

I am happy to see so many people falling over themselves, spewing all the conditioning they were subjected to. Also being oblivious to that what they foresee, alread being done by their fellows in superstition to those who choose to use their brains. And hardly one of them knows how to spell. Get yourselves an education and you may actually have something worthwhile to contribute (and I don't mean most of the drivel I have seen thus far). But some of the stuff I see, I actually like, there is a modicum of thinking going on. Could there be hope, or am I being too optimistic? ;-)

I don't think so, to be honest.
I am a Londoner and love living in a city of cultural diversity. The founding of a city now just for atheists would probably attract people of a certain cutlural outlook (I'm not saying atheists are not diverse, but they are certainly not as diverse as the planet as a whole and are often quite "westernised"). Homogeneity is boring, that's what the theists are trying to encourage in any case!
At the end of the day religion is a philosophy bereft of reason. It WILL die. With the advance of science and technology people will increasingly spontaneously see that their religion is nonsense. It's taking a lot longer than Nietzsche or Russell thought.... but it will. And when it happens people's distinct cultures will still be maintained to an extent in that society that Atheist-city could never have...
And having the theists around gives me an excuse to have a little argument once in a while as a diversion.

I've been thinking of a city built by women for some time...
But a city for atheists? It might be a city where people have their own values which they respect because they have self-esteem and it might even be a model city. My complaint would be that religion has inspired artists for centuries. A city without churches without cathedrals would be sad. The Bible is a great book for stories.
But couldn't this city easily be controlled by a totalitarian regime? The moment somebody says something vaguely religious they could get kicked out, though they feel they are true atheists? On second thought maybe such a city wouldn't be a good idea. Maybe now when everybody is free to believe or not believe whatever they like is the only solution.

I think this is an interesting idea. Would it be nice to live in a city without superstition and religious hatred and mindless bigotry? A place where we could be free to discuss ideas and develop moral philosophies without deterring to a higher power created thousands of years ago? Absolutely, sign me up!
BUT I think in doing that we'd all be missing out on a huge aspect of what makes atheist beliefs so special and important. I personally am really proud of my beliefs because they are rational and informed. The majority of devoutly religious people do not make informed decisions about their beliefs, they follow others, follow a rule book, follow whatever the Pope says. They don't compare and don't question. Atheists do. They question the world around them and have the strength to come up with their own ideas and reject what doesn't make sense. It's this analysis that makes atheism great: a choice of thinkers.
If we lived in a society without religious people, we wouldn't be making that choice any more...the only choice would be atheism. Children would be raised to believe only in atheism, and atheism would become the new "religion," the new status quo. It would no longer be about thinking. In order to really decide for ourselves, we need diversity, and that comes from looking at all sorts of beliefs and deciding for ourselves what makes sense.

Sorry, brother, but I would have to agree with you that all of the theocratics who had to put their two cents in trully did miss the point, and your opening addressing only atheists. I have not gone about bashing the Christian theme questions and I doubt that you do too...so I suppose that the golden rule of the Bible--do onto others as you would have them do onto you--was lost onto them. Personally, I don't recall laughing that hard when I read about two months ago that some guy was trying to start a Christian only town in Florida. Ok, I did laugh a lot, but I also stayed off of the floor. If he had posted his idea here before it hit the media, I would not have bashed on any grounds save that it would be illegal in this country.
Irregardless, though I do like the idea, I don't think that it would ever work. First, as "the last ninja" mentioned there is a great deal to be gained from diversity. I don't think that in the modern world any city could ever exist that banned all religions. However, I do think that that it would be possible to have a city set up upon completely practical terms, with practical rules and laws not founded in religious tradition. No "blue laws," no tax breaks for preachers and churches; subjects such as abortion and prostitution could be considered in a reasonable manner without pre-established bias. (I am not proposing legalizing every "vice," but only giving each a fair hearing and consideration for legalization. Nonetheless, I can just hear all of the theocrats now, upon reading this, blasting out about how we want to create a hedonistic society with prostitution and abortion on every street corner. I am willing to bet that those same people will also refuse to acknowledge that in times past nunneries--an even the Vatican--did double duty as brothels.) Unfortuantely, this city would be in a country and would be subject to the laws of this country...such as here in the U.S. where the current government is pushing for a pro-Christian agenda on all fronts and the entire constitution (while still a good document and an excellent guideline for government) was written from a Christian background with Christian constitutants in mind. Thus, any city started would be tainted from the beginning unless some sort an autonomy bit could be worked out, or it could be built in international territory (that is a long shot).
However, if a suitable site could be located in a suitable climate (in all aspects, not just temperature) and it looked like it would become a going enterprise I do believe that I would seriously consider moving there. I for one am becoming sick of seeing all of the Jesus fish swim by on cars driven by good Christians while my friends who have Darwin fish on their cars receive free keyings and other vandalism courtesy Christian generosity. I could go on and on, but I honestly don't think that I would be sorry to be able to live somewhere where it is not hip to be hipocritical.

You're making it sound as though being an atheist was once like being scene, or "belonging" to a way of life. It is not like that. Being Atheist simply method you do not suppose in god. Any god. None. Zero. If humans disagree with you, you must be given it and nonetheless be your self. I do not think like such a lot humans disagree, I honestly hadn't even notion of that...why do you care approximately in the event that they agree or disagree? Are you definite you do not suppose in god? Think approximately it with your self, simply with your self. Don't brain what others must say. You don't seem to be right here to cause them to glad, simply make your self glad. And being transgender handiest method you are now not like all people else. There are extra such as you, sure, however cope round. Accept it, and reside with it. It's not anything dangerous. So do not think dangerous.

I don't think having a convenient place where people hostile to atheists can have a buffet of drive bys or terrorist bombings is a good idea.
Besides, how are we to prove the superiority you speak of sequestered from the believers?
Don't be so stingy with your wise ways.
Stcik around and teach by being a living example of moral superiority.

Wow, that would be great! Can I come? I'm not exactly Atheist, but I'm way closer to being an Atheist Than to being a Christian. You might call me Agnostic, but I wouldn't say that, that really describes me. I believe in something, but it doesn't really seem like the Christian idea of God to me.

Interesting thought. I like the idea but am still trying to bend my mind around how fellow atheists would manage creating a society and its guidelines for practical everyday functioning. All the free thinkers, intellectuals ( fair to say there would be many of those) might have difficulty coming to unified decisions. Hmm . What do you think?

Not only is religion INDEED the root of all evil, but government ranks right up there maybe MORE SO. The city (or country?) would have to be pretty much religion-free AND government -free.
STARTING one from scratch however would be a hugh undertaking.
