I am getting the Mirena IUD in about 2 weeks. After talking with my doctor, we decided this was the best option for me and I was excited to get it. I started reading about it online ( I know I shouldn't have) about it and now I am a little worried. I am a 21 yr old female in a monogamous relationship. Never had any STDS and have not had a child. I'm a little worried about the pain and possibility of infertility if something goes wrong. I don't do well with hormones estrogen in particular and this seemed like my only alternative next to condoms. The doctor told me that there is only 1/7 amt of progesterone in the mirena as in the pill and that it is only excreted in the uterus and not in the blood stream. So I just want to know what you think....and if it is okay that I haven't had a child. I'm worried about a possible puncture to my uterus would this really render me infertile??

i am actually in the same boat as you...weird huh?
except the fact that i have 2 kids. I am 21, married and can not deal with hormones/estrogen. I'm also a medical assistant. I am getting the mirena IUD in two weeks. There are side effects with anything you put in your body. If it punctured your uterus, it would probably make you infertile. that's why they recommend it for women who have at least 1 child. This doesn't happen often. It really comes down to a personal decision, because its your body and your life. If it makes you feel any easier, i have known dozens of women who have gotten it and taken it out a few yrs later and got pregnant right away.good luck. If you want to talk e mail me j_brat01@yahoo

I am a nurse on a maternity ward. From women that have had them, they seem to love them. The risk of perforation is slim and available with any IUD. Under your circumstances this sounds like a pretty safe method of birth control. Having an IUD doesn't make a difference whether you have previously had a child or not. Your doctor must feel confident this is safe for you.

the chances of puncturing the uterus are pretty small, the docs who put them in know what they're doing. but personally for me, i had an IUD for 2 months, but it was too painful for me. I hope all goes well with you. as for doing you're own research, don't feel bad about it, it's always a good idea to research any procedure and/or new medicine given to you.

I tried to get one this past week but because I have not had any children the opening of the uterus was too small. I think this is a large part of the reason it is recommended for women who have had a kid.
