I will be turning 18 in a month and I have always wanted a tattoo since I was little. I was at a family function and I mentioned this and my family went nuts saying I shouldn't. People don't realize that teachers are people too and they have a right to get a tattoo. It doesn't make them a bad teacher, it makes them an individual. It is beautiful art. What do ya think?

There is nothing wrong with a teacher having a tattoo. And you are right, it does not make them a bad teacher. I know that I had plenty of "perfectly clean-cut goody-goody" looking teachers that were lousy, their classes were boring as hell, and I never really learned anything in their classes. I had one teacher (for half a year) who had a tattoo, and I had an "A" average while he was teacher. So please, do not listen to close-minded people that will say teachers should not have tattoos. Tattoos do NOT define the quality of teaching.

Honestly,in today's world...many schools will not hire a teacher if they see a visible tatoo, but that doesn't go to say that there are many schools that do not care if you have a tattoo or not. I would recommend getting it in a place where you could cover it during an interview and when you're teaching. Do not get a tattoo on your neck, face, or hands, but anywhere else, you should be fine! I am a teacher myself who does not have tattoos, but have heard it is looked down upon. Good luck, it is your decision, but it is something you will have to live with for the rest of your life, so I would definitely contemplate your decision before making a decision in haste. Good luck and Godspeed.

let me say great job---being a teacher at this early of an age. Anyhow, it will not make you look cool or "bad' and if you plan to control your students you will have to earn their respect; how will you earn their respect if you look like them, act like them, and try to fit in with them. Ask any teacher or students of the relationship between these two parties and the answer will be "it is us against them' so think about it before you act out on your want. If you decide to get a tattoo it is your choice. But ask how will it look when you get old; a saw one of my student's parents and he was old, skinny, and had tattoos on his arms---let me give you a better picture look at a raisin and try to imagine a tattoo on it---I felt embarrassed for my student. Have you ever seen people with tattoos all over their bodies yet they (those that are employed) do not cover their face but keep the tattoos below the neck line of their shirts so they can look respectful and professional.

Unfortunately; tattoos are not a acceptable thing to have in truly professional jobs. A elementary teacher at our school has two tatoos she got at college, she truly regrets them now. Most businesses expect to employ adults whyo are professionals; tatoos do not put off that mesage and sending the wrong message isn't going to be helpful to you in future. It might not be right that world looks negatively on tats, but the reality is that's how it is.

I've been in the school system for 10 years or more and I have 4 tattoos. They are in strategic places and are only seen if I want them to be. I agree with you and you are old enough now to get one without permission from your parents. I'm not telling you to be rebellious, because it's a permanent thing. Think about it before you go.

When I was kid ... all the men I knew wish they never got the tats they had. It's like clothes ... man they go out of style ...and you change the way you feel about them. Their expensive to get rid of. Tattoos can restrict your social and professional life too.

Donate blood before you do it. You usually can give every 56 days but you have to wait a year after getting a tattoo because of the danger of hepatitis.

Certain careers look down on visible tattoos. I worked in a law office where this guy had to bandage his forearm every day if he didn't wear long sleeves because he had a tattoo that was visible. My daughter has one on the back of her neck and she has to be very careful when she wears her hair up. Get a tattoo if you want but be careful where you put it.

Having a tattoo makes you look unprofessional. I would think less of a teacher who paints his or her body. That's not the sort of role model I want for my children--and remember that teachers are expected to set a good example for their students. If you find that restrictive, then you should chose another profession.---Unless you're planning on teaching in San Francisco. There the scuzzier you look, the more likely you are to get hired and promoted.

I think it's perfectly fine. I'm a Nurse and I have 2 tattoos. I think as long as you get it in a place where it can be covered during your professional hours, there is nothing wrong with it.
