All I know is she was a hotel owner, or married to a rich man who owned hotels. She was very nasty and unpleasant. Sorry, that's all I know and it came from newspapers and tv news. A greedy, dishonest person from what I remember.

Her real name is not Leona. She chose it because it sounded better than her own name. Everyone knows that a real Leona is a woman who takes charge but although she is a huntress, she is also beautiful and sexy. Does Helmsley look sexy to you? She needs to stick to the name her mama gave her. My name is Leona. Leelee is a nick name I was given as a child. I am sure she is a winner in the boardroom but apparently the changing of her name unnaturally did her in.

You make a good point about how the public image can be exaggerated. However, I remember back in the '70s, she used to advertise her hotels, and just reading the ads, I would think she was someone I'd never want to be on the wrong side of. So when the stories broke about her ruthlessness and law-breaking, it was no surprise. It's been my experience that the more a person promotes themselves and their good qualities, the more you should watch out for them.

What I know is what I've read in the media. She and her husband owned hotels, and she didn't pay taxes on all of their income. She expected employees to do tasks outside of their jobs. I believe her most famous quote was something about the little people, and how she's better than they are.
