Most of the time, your ultrasound will show normal breast tissue or a benign (non cancerous process) like a simple cyst or fibroadenoma. Sometimes, an ultrasound is needed just because the patient's breast tissue is dense, and therefore, hard to see on the mammogram. Many patients are unhappy about returning for another exam, especially if that exam ends up normal, but I would rather have one extra test too many than one to few exams. It is just a way to be as sure as possible that you are okay. Even if the ultrasound comes back suspicious, and you require a biopsy, remember that somewhere around 85-90% of breast biopsies prove to be benign!

Do not worry yourself. Depending on your age and family history, this could be completely normal. Chances are whatever they have seen is benign. The vast majority of abnormalities seen on mammograms are nothing. Now a days, everytime you see or feel a lump you immediately think it's cancer. Do not worry until you are given more information.

An unltrasound is usually just for backup if they thought they saw something. I wouldn't worry. Just give them a chance to see what it is. Chances are it's nothing to worry about, but better to check things out and make sure. Don't worry.

when a patient has a mamagram is is just on the safe side that they are sending you for an ultrasound. They probaly want a closer look at the tissue in your breasts.
