I have stayed in our relationship for 34+ years. Our love has grown richer day by day. I truly believe that a spat now & then makes for a better marriage. We each become more tollerant and understanding of each other. We are now at a point where a lot of times we know what each other is going to say before it is said. We can each see something and both laugh without saying a word cause we know what the other was thinking. We are into early retirement, empty nest syndrome, no grandchildren yet and feel like we are in our second dating years again. It is WONDERFUL!

If they are staying in the relationship for love, as you said, then obviously they stay because they love each other! I have been with my husband for 13 years (married for 5) and I like him and love him more and more every day. We are best friends and I can't imagine my life without him. But I also know that having been his wife and friend has made me a better person. Someday when he's not here anymore I will be strong enough to life my life alone. I'll be sad and I'll miss him terribly but I won't be afraid because I will have already experienced how wonderful life can be, kwim?

I think people stay together for so long because they Trust, Respect, and they truly love each other, and because if they have been together for 25 years they probably will have a family, house and devorsing will ruin everything they have accomplished. If a couple have been together for so long like for 25 years they probably will stay together. If they didn't truly love each other they would have devorsed a long time ago.

Sometimes it just becomes like a habit....get into a rut.
And, true, some are afraid of being on their own, but.....you have to be happy within yourself, before you can truly be happy with a partner.
