you know how if you look down at a brick from above, and it has 3 holes in it? what are they for?

I'm no mason, but I'd assume to lighten the weight and permit faster baking in the kiln. Perhaps when they are laid, the mortar would fill in a bit, therefore increasing the grip.

So the inside of the brick can be filled with concrete. Also it saves money on brick making material.

I believe the ones without holes are called pavers like for driveways or streets.

for the mortar to fill in to make a sturdier wall, foundation or what ever, also, rebar could be run through it or wiring conduit.
