Why is it that people who claim to be against bigotry and small-mindedness say "Well, ALL southerners (or Texans in my case) are redneck racists..." and things like that? Anyone else had this experience? (essembly.com and places like that)

I TOTALLY agree! I'm a native New Yorker and my husband is a native Georgian. We met in Ga but moved to NY for a year and you would not believe the things people would say to my husband when they heard his accent. You can show up in NY speaking no English, wearing any kind of outlandish dress you want, and you're welcomed as a "citizen of the world" with "respect for your culture." But if you're from the south or the midwest, you're immediately branded as a backward, knuckle-dragging, bigoted, ignorant Neanderthal redneck who can't spell cat.

Another tendency I've witnessed a lot of - people who are always going off on a PC rant about tolerance more often than not live in unicultural subdivisions with gates and a security guard, and send their kids to elite private schools with similar socio-economic composition. Hmmm...

I was born and raised in the Houston area. I attended college in the Texas panhandle. I lived overseas. Then, I spent 10 years in the Northeast (Boston & NYC). During that 10 years, I heard some sort of bigoted comment about Texans and Southerners at least weekly.

Because most rednecks are white and anti-racism is only popular and politically correct if it targets minorities.

That's what I've been screaming the last three months I've been on this site. I just keep calling them out on their hatred, and believe me, it comes from all sides.
