Today's marketing strategy is called branding.
This means setting up the position "what does your restaurant mean?".
For example "What does McDonald's mean?".
The McDonald Corporation want it to mean:
"family fun experience at an affordable price" which means that the food is only secondary to the family experience.

So the restaurant has to project a unique image and market a unique set of offerings.
The other main considerations are Quality of the environment - such as classy, clean, and at a decent location.
Customer Service - you need to have a great team to show that they care for the guests.
The Food-price combination should define the category of your clientelle. So do market research in advance before opening.
There's lots of work and money involved. But for some, there are good rewards.
Finally, you need to have a cook who owns a stake in the restaurant, as no cook means no food.

the type of food, the wait staff, the way the cook prepares the food, the cooks secret recipes for his food. If you have a friendly good wait staff, your restaurant is clean, and well maintained, you have a very good cook, and they way that the food is prepared (plate presentation) and then offer a good price for what they are getting that will keep people coming back. You can have two restaurants with the same type of food, one with lousy wait staff, a not so good cook, and the food is just thrown on the plate, and the place is dirty, and then one that has good wait staff, a good cook, the plates look good, And the place is clean, which one do you think would get repeat customers???

Restaurants are not like other businesses. They have unique online challenges and opportunities. Restaurants also face unprecedented competition and corporate chains with massive marketing budgets. This site shows independent restaurant owners how to surpass those corporations for a fraction of the cost using the superior methods. Search engines and social media are truly the great equalizer for independent restaurants that know how to properly utilize them. This is where you can find that knowledge.

as per one research out of 100 customers who stop coming to your restaurant 1% of your customer dies, 3% shift their location, 7% stop coming because they don't like your food, 11 % are taken away by your competitors and 78% stop coming because they feel that they are not treated with warmth and genuine interest. proper public relation makes wonders in restaurant business.

Maintain only these two and people wont mind waiting a little longer to get your food. They also wont mind paying more, believe me. Quality of food is the most important, remember.
