Please put the answer in your own words. Please don't come up with some obvious answer like, "It's the lactose. Duh." Please explain in detail what processes in the nervous system cause the feelings of nausea, and how the nervous system is caused to react that way. Please explain which chemical gets assimilated/digested that causes the nausea, and where in the digestive tract it gets digested. Is it the lactose, or some product of the lactose, like for example lactic acid produced by bacterial fermentation? Which bacteria, if any? How does it get digested? What is the connection between the digestive tract and the nervous system? How does the information/matter get transmitted? How do the chemical substances get transmitted?

Lactose is a disaccharide found in milk. In young people and many adults, an enzyme called lactase is produced and secreted into the GI tract to break down lactose. However, in many adults, the body stops production of lactase. In these people, the lactose goes undigested until it reaches the part of the small intestine colonized by bacteria that can digest it. What happens is these bacteria grow and metabolize rapidly, so there is a lot of acid and gas production by these bacteria in the lower small intestine and the large intestine. I think the nausea would be mostly due to the rapid gas production and the resulting swelling of portions of the intestine. The smooth muscle of the intestines is innervated and stretching is easily sensed.

By the way, don't get confused on the sound-alike lactose and lactic acid (or lactate), they are different compounds and mostly unrelated.

All I can say is that I'm lactose-intolerant. I had no idea I was until recently. I used to buy Hygeia milk and noticed my stomach hurt and began to get gassy. Then, my grandma recommended I switch to LactAid. I thought it was a bit much, but I tried once and it really worked for me. Now, I try to limit my intake of yogurt and cheese for that reason, but LactAid really helped.
