Positive - Eruptions with lava are beautiful! Also they make more land. That's what Hawaii is made out of! Also, the land that it makes it VERY fertile and that's good to grow new crops on.
Negative - It's hot! And the lava destroys everything in it's path.

The positive effect is that eventually in some cases an island or new land mass is formed... if not for volcanic eruptions, we wouldn't have Hawaii! Negatives, of course, is that human life can be lost... look at Mt St. Helens a few years back.
