So the batter or another opposing player cannot read their lips.
There's a great example from the 1989 National League Championship Series between the Giants and Cubs. In Game 1 Will Clark came to the plate with the bases loaded. The Cubs catcher called time and went out to talk to the Cubs pitcher, who at the time was Greg Maddux. On TV you could clearly see Maddux saying "Fastballs away." Next pitch, Clark crushed a grand slam to deep right field. The Giants went on to win the series 4 games to 1.

The other team is constantly on the lookout for signals of the other team, and will try to read his lips. Why do yo think the catcher leaves his mask on when conferring with the pitcher?

Now normally they only do it when a runner is on base but it is so not only the batters and runners can see, but base coaches can see very well. When Bret Saberhagen pitched he was so nevous that people would figure out what he said that he and his catcher used sign language at the mound.

So the other team can't lipread what they are talking about. They're usually talking about what pitches they're going to do next and strategy. The catcher's mouth is already covered with the mask so he's good.

So that the batter or the rest of the opposing team can't lip read. I mean you don't want them to know that an inside fastball is coming and then have them belt it over the fence.

Because they are talking about strategy to get the batter out, and the cameras can zoom in enought that their lips could be read and people could figure out what pitch he was going to throw.
