Nothing to do with magic. Infact, DnD Guide even has them working chemistry. I'm an alchemist and I study the use and helpfulness in today's world. Nothing too mutch, but it ALL is based around "Equivalent Exchange" (A REAL PHILOSOPHY of alchemy). The fact where if you give enough and worked hard you would eventually go up in knowledge.
Try, as some confused people may, but you can't fixture alchemy to occult or witchcraft. I mean, many MONKS of the Church studied alchemy in the medival ages.

Answer: Alchemy, belive it or not, is not a bunch of numbers and theories like chemistry. It is a way to try and look INTO the world when you don't have lots of money and also philosophy comes with it. Equivalent Exchange and all of the other mental and physical philosophies were said, at ONE point in time, by an alchemist.

Alchemy is old fashioned chemistry (simply speaking). Orginally the cheif efforts of alchemists were to turn lead into gold although other experiments were tried as well. "Occult" is a very different word (latin meaning "hidden") that relates to pagan worship/sacrifice and/or other "secret" aspects of religions.

Alchemy is the attempt to transform base metals into gold. Alchemy has nothing to do with the occult. I looked for synonyms in the thesaurus and none of them are very exciting: experimenter, transformer, pseudoscientist

To me "the occult" immediatly has a darker connotation

or magus

or an enchanter

Why do the protangonists of your story have to conform to one of the traditional 'magic practitioner' labels? Decide what they can/can't do and come up with or make up a suitable name.
