Unfortunately in your line of work you probably get more than your share of unscrupulous individuals who make it their business to be deceiving. Your task is a hard one.
There are books...especially on "How to tell if people are lying". This is a start. Then you will just have to practice, practice and then practice some more.

Don't just accept what people say. That is what they want to appear as.
Look at how the person is dressed and if they are clean and well kept.
Watch their body language.
Especially pay attention to actions and what a person does and not what they say.
Give friendships time to age like fine wine.
Don't be paranoid but be careful. People are selfish.

Perhaps you just want to believe in the best of others? Maybe they understand this and use it to their advantage?
Motives; think of what their motives might be and make them show their character to you before getting to close.

Why not assume the worst of everyone?
More often that not you'll be right.....and on the times you are wrong you'll be pleasantly surprised.
