The best protection is YOU! If you educate yourself about not opening the wrong kinds of email attachments or going to drive-by-download websites or downloading questionable software, you won't need anti-virus or spyware protection. I have a notebook PC that I use online all the time, and it has not one piece of spyware or virus software on it, because I stay away from the crap that puts that stuff on it.

ok everyone is rooting for NORTON. GO TO EVERY SINGLE SITE(GOOGLE IT) THAT HAS REVIEWS AND YOU WILL SEE NORTON IS NEAR THE BOTTOM OR IS NOT EVEN ON THE LIST! The TOP leading antivirus is McAfee! The person that said you need to log into mcafee is lieing. That is only if you install Privacy service which btw is useless. If you get the Spamkiller,Antivirus, and Firewall you are SET! The Antispyware from mcafee is good too but I use adaware for that. MCAFEE SHOULD BE YOUR CHOICE NOT NORTON!

I prefer the free products for home use as they avoid the bloated security center software that the big boys are using now:
Free Anti-Spyware Programs
There are quite a few free anti-spyware programs available! I suggest that users should use at least 3 different products to regularly scan their systems.
Spybot Search and Destroy is an excellent program for scanning for and removing spyware. The resident modules can be a bit buggy, but the extra included tools such as startup manger are great! http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
Adaware is another good scanner and removal tool but it has no resident abilities at all in the free version. http://free.lavasoft.com
Ewido is fairly new as a free spyware scanner, but it comes from the people who brought us AVG, so I expect good things: http://free.grisoft.com
Microsoft has their free scanner avalable for download although many advise that this tool is a bit permissive of questionable programs and add ons! Defender does offer a couple of options the others do not have such as scheduled scan. http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
The Yahoo toolbar includes an Spyware scanner that work ok. Yahoo does not advise this but you can run this program outside the toolbar by simply creating a shortcut to the exe file found in the yahoo directory under program files. http://toolbar.yahoo.com/
Once you have your system cleaned up of all the spyware, then you should protect yourself against new infestations. Spyware Blaster does a very good job and does not use up any system resourses in doing so. http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Free Anti-Virus Programs
AVG has a good personal use Anti-Virus product available at: http://free.grisoft.com
Avast Antivirus, also for non-commercial use is available at: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Both these products include active background scanning modules!
Bitdefender has an excellent scanner and removal tool but does not have any active background protection in the free version that is available at: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html

Norton has to be the WORST. I would recomend AVG Anti-Virus, if you are going to be looking at a free version. Heck that would be your best protection.
Unless you live in Canada in the provinces Serviced by Telus. If you have Telus, they you automatically get Telus Security Services with your internet, the thing is you might not know it, and you have to download them first. Just go to http://www.telus.net, and download their security service, and then once it is installed, type in your internet account username and password. It will activate and you are protected by Anti-Virus, Firewall (extra cost), Anti-Spyware (limited version), Pop-Up Blocker, and many others!

i take advantage of AVG for viruses, and that i take advantage of Spybot seek & break, alongside with Lavasoft AdAware SE, for undercover agent ware. AVG won't slow your laptop down until it is doing an entire device test for viruses. I time table this for 3 a.m. on an universal basis. you're able to do it any time which you're no longer engaged on the computing gadget. something of the time it is silently and invisibly finding for inbound assaults with out slowing your laptop.

MS defender is good and free. Adaware is ok.
I feel most antivirus companies create their own viruses to keep themselves in business.
A firewall has been the best investment. Anything gets past that, then you let it in and are to blame.

hi, i recommand you to use firefox.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
firefox can edit which site/popup to block and unblock.
besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
download firefox for free:

Best Wishes && Good Luck!
