I found a great pair of sneakers at Easy Spirt last summer - they were red canvas and looked like Mary Jane shoes.
They aren't being sold any more, but Easy Spirit has more interesting "sneakers". They look like really comfortable shoes in canvas, but have sneaker bottoms and the support you expect to get from a sneaker.
New sneakers are great - you feel like you can run forever.

Here are the generic ones that most people, regardless of what name they are, where:

Nike - Air Force Ones or Air Max
Reeboks - Classics (either all white or black)
Converse - Chuck Taylor collection; really cool cause you can get them with designs, patterns or in different colors; also, they don't cost soo much (run around $50, at the most)
Adidas - the Classics, once again
Puma

I would go with the Chuck Taylors because they're comfy, inexpensive, and you can buy them in your own distinctive color. You can even go online and design your own shoe. Just beware because they aren't too great to wear in the wintertime. Hope I've helped!

Reebok makes an all black sneaker that I used to wear when I was dealing cards at a casino. Very comfortable and black goes with almost anything.
