i agree weed should be taxed. But the sale and consumption should be strictly controlled. Weed should only be sold and consumed on specially licenced premises (stopping under 18's!). A test should also be available for the police to stop any 1 they suspect of smoking in public or driving while high.
The tax revenue alone would easly pay for these changes.
Might even cut down on crime, weed smokers dont usually get violent!

Well the fundamental difference is weed is illegal and alcohol isn't. But they are as damaging as each other, which is why the Government will never legalise marijuana. That would be like the Government legalising cigarettes today. I am sure if it was known how damaging cigarettes were to the health, they would never have been legalised.
Cannabis is, in many ways, more damaging than alcohol. Cannabis abuse, particularly at a young age, can lead to mental health problems. It is also an anti-social drug. Anyone I have know who has smoked weed has no ambition. The weed leads to this 'tomorrow, tomorrow' mentality. It is as damaging when it comes to driving - no one should drive under the influence of weed, for example, or attempt to cook/use sharp knives in the kitchen whilst impaired by weed. It's far too dangerous.
I think there is useful evidence that weed can help in pain control in a number of debilitating illnesses, such as MS and for those sufferers, cannabis or a drug derived from cannabis should be allowed. For everyone else, I think weed should be criminalised and much harsher penalties imposed on those found in possession. And, since alcohol isn't essential to survival, I think the legal drinking age should be increased to at least 21 and people should be forced to pay for treatment if they end up in hospital as a result of abusing alcohol.

Cannabis is being smoke while alcohol is consume orally. In countries like India, cannabis is a proven herbal medicine. In other countries, they manufacture medicine with an ingredient from these plants, although they are not keeping a mark on the label for obvious reasons. In fact, there are pharmaciutical companies that import these stuff for the same reason. Alcohol, like the cannabis has a proven effect on people health. It is clinically proven, that person with fever who drinks a shot of brandy helps releive and normalized his fever. These both items, when taken according to prescription can be beneficial, but excessive and severe use can lead to physical and emotional damage.

Ask Marc Emery, he's facing possible life in federal prison for selling cannabis seeds in Canada and shipping them to the US. Logic really doesn't make our laws, money does. And alcohol companies have $ to spread around. Also the DEA gets BILLIONS of our tax dollars they'd like to keep on the public dole. Then there's the paper and textile and farming industries who'd have to compete with hemp...I would suggest reading Jack Herer's book " The Emperor Wears No Clothes" but be ready to get pissed off if you do.

Cannabis can have serious affects on the brain, sometimes even forcing people to misspell alcohol, but more seriously it can lead to mental illness.
Some may say it is 'natural', yet the kinds of weed grown nowadays is chemically enhanced to make it very strong, making illness more prone.
Maybe, for serious illnesses that need drastic pain relief, cannabis could be prescribed, but I don't think it should be legalised. This is similar to morphine and heroin. I don't think heroin should be leagalised, but I advocate the use of morphine if it is beneficial.

The government couldn't tax weed. It's too easily grown by individuals. Really, strong alcohol is useful as an anti-septic. I wouldn't advise anyone to put weed on a scrape...that's dirty and wouldn't numb it at all.
Weed can't help anything that common. And it wouldn't do any good to fight for it. The weed laws just need to be changed, the pot-heads serve too much time. 5years for each seed on your person is a little too extreme...... just let the cops take it and burn it; sure more will come---cops could just take that too...

no body cares what i think or you think or mary thinks the people with big money ie the liquor companies it is what they think that counts unless you have enough money to battle them in court then what you think is just another joke to them. i guess the weed people didnt have the brains to patent it ino cigatettes thus legalizing it like the big tobacco companies there that should tell you something about the weed users "did not have the sense to trn this habit into a multi million dollar business guess their brains were dulled by smoking the stuff so they cared less about making it legal or in fact making money. oh well so be it. too late now

Cannabis has medical benefits, as does alcohol. Yes, cannabis ought to be legalized and taxed similarly to tobacco. Prohibition didn't work in the 20's, it's not working now, so what the hell makes you think it'd work in the future?

One is highly illegal and harmless and the other is perfectly legal and a War Criminal.
The War Criminal pays taxes. The harmless one doesn't. That's the whole enchilada right there.
They can come up with all the biased studies and bullsh!t they want, but what it comes down to is:
You just don't ever see them scraping pot-smokers off the road, do you?
