In a general election, in order to vote:

1. You must be at least 18 years old as of election day.

2. You must be a citizen (either born or naturalized) of the US.

3. You must not have had you voting rights taken away because of some criminal conviction (in some states).

4. You must register to vote. Often you must register at least 30 days (or more) before any election day. You must vote at the polling place that your state/county/city assigns you to. Alternatively, you may vote 'absentee' according to your state's laws.

5. Contrary to what happens frequently in the larger cities in my state you must be alive at the time you vote. (not a joke, it happens)

6. You may vote for anyone on the ballot. You may vote for everyone from one party OR the other.

7. You may vote for some from one party and some from another. You may skip some offices. You may vote for only one person if you choose.

8. In most jurisdictions you may write in your choice for any particular office. I suggest that you discuss this (how NOT who) with one of the polling place workers before you vote.

9. If you have a disability (e.g., in a wheelchair), you may have someone you trust help you to vote. Again, discuss this with the polling workers.

10. Often there are questions on the ballot. You may vote for or against each one or not vote at all.

11. If you are a US citizen living abroad without a US address, I'm not sure what you can do to vote in any US election. Check with the Attorney General's office in the last state that you lived.
