I'm looking for any genre of book that's good for a woman that's just recently been opened up to her femininity! I've been oppressed. I've already got the Vagina Monologues and Mama Gena's Guide to Womanly Arts. Would you please list some of your own? No romance novels whatsoever, please. I'm not interested an any book if I'll find it in the romance novels section. However, fiction, self-help, health, sexuality, and history are all fine genres. I'm looking for something about maybe bigger women, getting over men from bad relationships, getting in touch with sexuality and pleasure, or maybe self-esteem. Thanks for you help.

Women who Run with the Wolves: author uncertain; yes, it has aged. It has dated. But, it is still good. I read it when I ended an oppressive situation and though it is rather cliched and emotional, it also has a lot of good points and can be a useful therapeutic tool.
Woman on the Edge of Time: Sorry, don't remember the author. But it's a pretty stunning book. It's set in the present, the heroine is a badly abused Hispanic woman who phase-shifts into a separate reality where society is well-organized and women are equal citizens. It is very bold, very interesting, well-written and totally original. It ends with the Hispanic woman acting strongly against society to try to save herself. Thrilling.
Oh, and I guess you've already got The Women's Room, by Marilyn French. It's really the first of its kind. Written in the Seventies, about a woman trying to understand the banality of her marriage and conventional family life, and her own guilt about not being satisfied with it. Haunting, prosaic, brilliant.
Another obvious classic: Fear of Flying, by Erica Jong.
The Group, by Mary McCarthy. These last three are good to get because they document the earliest attempts by women fiction writers to reach out of their categories and ask hard questions.
Reviving Ophelia, author uncertain. It is a series of case studies and conclusions written by a female psychologist aiming to understand why it is that young girls often self-destruct when they reach their teenage years. Although it is about younger girls, I found many relevant points and ideas in it which set me thinking. I recommend this work of non-fiction to any young woman, and certainly for teenage girls.
I hope you find and enjoy these challenging books about women, by women.

This suggestion might seem very odd to you at first, but bear with me a minute.
The Journals of Louisa May Alcott.
You may think of her as merely the author or Little Women, but she was much, much more. Her journals will not tell you what to do or give you the "answers," but how many books really do? If you want to be empowered, it is not always best to follow others' paths like an exact science. If you read this book, you will be INSPIRED, I promise. I HAD to read it for a class in Women's History---I did so begrudgingly; however, no other woman in history gave me the inspiration that Ms. Alcott did. She was a real, honest to goodness feminist, and if you pick up this book from the library shelf, you will be awed by her spirit, her intelligence, her dedication and service to the feminist movement, her courage, and her tenacity.

Forget the FLUFF. Get a copy of Evora Jordan's book
Twenty-One Days With A Vulture
Twenty-One Days With A Vulture is an autobiographical account of the author's vacation of a lifetime transformed into a harrowing personal nightmare. This is an interesting story of abuse and escape.

She has three fictionalized mysteries also, which were based on true stories.

You might try some memoirs of women you like. I always find those inspirational. I'd recommend "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth Gilbert. I really want to read Lorraine (The Sopranos) Bracco's "On the Couch", but haven't gotten to it yet.
