If it is still under the Shahs, things might be better off today. It could be very much modernised and safer to everybody, but also means richer for the country and the Shah.
To get back probably needs to have a "games over" and re-start with some forward looking clearer minds. They have the natural resources to back them up anyway, and can make good use of that to re-build the country.

The Shah of Iran was "installed" by the United States. He was a ruthless ruler and learned all about torture from our very own CIA. Check your history books.

Fact is, the Shahs of Persia got kicked out in the Iranian revolution in the 1970s. You'd need to stage another revolution to get them back in - and they still won't be the same.
The Ayatollah still works like a Shah, I suppose.

"old Iran" was not a great place. It was a police state ruled by a despotic monarch. That's why the had a revolution. True the new government is worse, but the only reason that the US supported the Shaw was that he was anti-communist and anti-fundamentalist.

The 20th century shahs of Iran were merely military adventurers - there was nothing great about them except their own self-aggrandisment.

The Iranians have great potential but unfortunately to reach that potential we may need to go in like we did in Iraq.
