Sometimes. I have a dog who has distinct sounds that he makes for "food", "cookie", "out" and "itch". Now, do I understand him or has he "taught" me to respond to these sounds? Don't know, but it works for us.
Of the other two dogs I have, one will never do anything other than bark incessantly over everything. The other has his own set of sounds that he uses...and yes, I'm figuring them out.

All kidding aside, I had a wonderful Irish Setter & we got to know one another so well I use to "think" the word "WALK" several times & all of a sudden out of a sound sleep she would look up at me & get excited. We did this with several things & one day I read that Irish Setter's have an ability to for ESP if they were really close to their owners.

I can understand my dog, but its more paying attention to her body language and bark tones than speaking "dog".
