Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness (or property). Were they successful? Yes, beyond a doubt. Slavery was an accepted practice back then, and they didn't think twice about it. The country was freed from the British and they went about drafting the constitution when the articles of confederation failed. It's significant failures concerning slavery aside, the Constitution of the United States is one of the greatest documents ever compiled and adopted. It's been used, I think, no less than 100 times to model or create a similar document in countries across the globe. Remember, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

No they could not reconcile slavery with the Declaration of Independence, all the founding fathers argued over that point, slavery was practiced the world over back then, and most were raised with it. I think Washington released his before his death and I think Jefferson freed his upon his death. But giving up your slaves back then would be like asking a rich man to give up all his money to day. Slavery was practiced for over a thousand years before their time and by just about every race or nation at on time or another.

Hardly, even the founding fathers while drafting the Declaration owned slaves throughout their lives.
