The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* Running a Successful Construction Company by David Gerstel
* Smart Business for Contractors: A Guide to Money and the Law by Jim Kramon
* How to Succeed With Your Own Construction Business by Stephen Diller
* Construction Forms and Contracts by Craig Savage

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

It is very common for a construction employee to feel that they would be better off starting their own construction company. After all, you may be better at building houses than your boss and you might be able to be more efficient. As others have said, it is vital that you obtain your contractor's licence. Each state is different, and you will need to contact your state offices to obtain specific information. Sometimes it's as easy as passing a test.

You will need to somehow market yourself as a valid construction source and the marketing is your angle to figure out. Once you have that contractor's licence, however, you're completely free to begin doing construction work of your own.

Get a contractor's license. You have to take a test and they charge for that as well as the license.

Before you go bragging about how much you know, you might want to learn to spell knowledge.
