I'm straight btw. But i have a number of close gay friends. Homophobia confuses me. i have yet to see the point in being homophobic. Some use the bible as a reason, but that also forbids wearing clothes made of more than one material.

Any gay bashing will seriously annoy me.

Yeah, I'm gay. And it confuses me too. I don't want to have sex with a straight guy (thought I might have seen one or two I wish were gay!), and I don't want to convert any body's son (as if that were even possible). I don't want to cause any body's marriage to crumble (most people do a good enough job of that without any help from me, and God Bless the 40+% that make it!).

Thanks for being a friend.

I've been beaten to the punch. "Homophobia" has become an ugly word (which is a good thing and a sign of - slow - progress). As such, no one wants to admit to being homophobic, or heterosexist (if they've even heard the word before). As such, you get the posts like the ones above. "I'm not homophobic, I just don't like gay people". "I'm not racist, I just don't like Asians". "I'm not homophobic, but...y'know, gays are all the same and promiscuous and stuff". ::rolls eyes::

As for why: it's essentially tradition. Society has frowned upon it for as long as anyone can remember. My parents were homophobes brought up by homophobes brought up by homophobes. And that lasted while the gay community let it; then some people finally decided they were done with that BS. We're still in the transitory period, but, like racism (no, they're not the same, but I'm using a simile; deal with it) it won't ever go completely away; best we can hope for is to end the institutional aspect (which is the best we can hope for for racism; it's a goal that hasn't been reached yet).
The religious aspect: that's usually just something the more intelligent people use to reinforce their beliefs; the less intelligent (or those who give up their free thought willingly and let someone else think for them) then listen and believe what the more intelligent bigots tell them.

The core cause of this fear is the result of the fact that many homophobes, including most virulent, violent homophobes are themselves repressed sexually, often with same sex attractions. One of the recent studies done at the University of Georgia among convicted killers of gay men has shown that the overwhelmingly large percentage of them (more than 70%) exhibit sexual arousal when shown scenes of gay sex. The core fear, then, for the homophobe is that he himself might be gay, and might be forced to face that fact. The homophobia can be as internalized as it is externalized - bash the queer and you don't have to worry about being aroused by him.

All they gotta do is ask nicely ime sure someone will do them ....lol

A lot of them like to do it on here because they risk nothing doing it ...face to face i doubt they would be so brave.....its a sad sad phobia.

You really need to tell us YOUR definition of homophobia. Too many gays believe that if someone doesn't agree with their lifestyle then they are homophobes. They feel the need to have everyone accept their lifestyle. Some people, like me, don't like it and don't accept it. I don't do anything or say anything to people but I don't have to like it. I still have rights too don't I? I'm sure that some gay bigot on here is going to call me a homophobe because they don't agree with me because I don't agree with them. Logical isn't it?

I think that there are many causes for homophobia..but the big one seems to be fear....It's a little odd that the most homophobic are the biggest advocates that homosexuality is a choice.. Perhaps they feel it is a choice because it's something they struggle with every day of their lives...l

As a gay person, I want to know where all these straight guys see gay people making out all the time. I do like seeing that. Please, next time, instead of complaining about how much you hate it, tell us WHERE!?!?!? I find it very hard to believe that they are seeing gay people making out all over the place. I have just never seen a place like that.

i'm also straight and i hate the way gay people are treated. people are programmed in their youth that being gay is wrong from their parents. also if they don't act like everyone else who is being homophobic, they will be outcast. Just like how everybody in the south is basically religious and if you dont agree about religion with them they will treat you badly. It's a learned behavior that needs to be unlearned.

i don't understand it either....my view is that no one deserves to be put down or treated differently because of their sexual orientation. it's not a sin, and so many people act as if it was. i'm not trying to say that i feel sorry in any way, but i would find it hard to always be judged and put down because of my orientation. if i were gay, i would have a hard time coming out because of homophobia, and it's not something that is going away anytime soon i'm afraid.

I agree with the previous answer. I personally think that God made us with the design of a man & woman, not what ever you think is right. I feel homosexuality is wrong. I also know that God does not support acts of violence twoards those that turn away from him. God gave us free will. Do I choose to associate with people who CHOOSE to participate in homosexuality? No. I feel this is wrong. Do I choose to spend time with someone who lies, cheats, steals? No. The reason for my choice is the same. I know that God's word the Bible tells me the way God wants me to live. I know He does not approve of any of these practices.
