Imagine being in the bottom of the 9th inning, you are down by one run and the tying and go-ahead run are in second and third. You are the last chance that your team has. You are in the one game to the championship game and you hear every single person in the park chanting your name…How many of you people will perform under that pressure.

PLEASE DONT LIE...I AM DOING RESEARCH

I don't know of any sports fan who has imagined themselves in a situation like that. Unfortunately 99.9% of us will never know the feeling. Baseball is the only game where you can fail 70% of the time and still be good enough to enter the Hall Of Fame. The odds are always with the pitcher but that's what makes baseball such a great game. Every pitch is an adventure, an undiscovered country, and that's why "We Play The Game". Do you know how many imaginary game winning home runs I've hit? Hundreds!!! One day I'll show you all of my imaginary world series rings!! lol!!

You defiantly have to be in the situation to feel a bit calmer quite a bit. You want to develop rituals that you do every time you get in the box , serve a ball, shoot a free throw. So that you do the same thing whether it is the 1st inning or 9th inning , first quarter or fourth. Swing the bat the same amount of times, shifting your weight the same way , stepping out after each pitch etc. Try and work on your breathing so you stay relaxed , also do not squeeze to hard , keep your hands lose.

I would think experience would be the best answer. When I've encountered a sports situation for the first time, choking often follows. I'm just not comfortable and my performance suffers. Give me a few shots at it, though, and I'm better. For example, I needed a few chances before I wanted the ball at the end of a basketball game, or wanted to hit in a baseball game.

Chances are good that people in the situation you described have been through similar incidents ... and succeeded. I would bet that would help.

I'm pretty nervous in that situation, but so far I haven't let my team down. Good luck with your reasearch!
