Either one is going to be a great peice of harware. The thing is that the Sony probably has windows XP on it and the Apple has mac OSX on it. So, the question is really more of an operating system question. Everybody I ever met that has an apple, loves it, but... 85% of the rest of the world is running windows, so when you go somewhere like partypoker.com with a windows machine, you just clcik install and you're up and running. With an apple, you have to poke arround and see if they have a mac version of their software that you can download and sometimes they don't. So there will be some things you can't do because you're not using the same thing as everyone else. The apple system may be the best, but the windows system is 4 times more compatible with the rest of the computing world. Dell, HP, Compaq, and toshiba also have a good selection of windows laptops. You almost have to go with windows anymore because it's #1 by such a huge margin, but to apple's credit, I never have anyone go on and on about how they love their windows pc and they do about apple.

Interesting choice. The MacBook and VAIO FJ are almost identical right down to the built-in webcam.
The Sony wins on screen size, having a 14.1 inch widescreen instead of the Mac's 13.3 inch widescreen. It also has a slight advantage in style and might have a better keyboard feel. Try them both in person if you can.
The MacBook wins on technology: the dual-processor Core Duo chip is faster than the Pentium M chip in the VAIO. And the new Macs will in fact run Windows but don't come with Windows installed, while Mac OS X itself only runs on Apple products.

Sony. Do not get an Apple because the Mac OS is not compatible with most programs that have to be run on Windows.

Both Apple and Sony make good laptops, but they run completely different operating systems. It's difficult to compare the two. I personally couldn't do jack with an Apple laptop, but that's only because I have almost no experience with MacOS.

If you have already made up your mind to choose between Apple and Sony, Apple would be a better option. You can also try HP. Their support is great.
